College Counseling Overview

Williams college counselors and teachers shepherd students and parents through the college search process by focusing on a superb preparation for any college experience and finding the best college fit for individual students. Standardized tests have their place in the selection process, but colleges give more weight to the effort reflected in three and a half years’ worth of work compared with the three and a half hours of a standardized test.

The Williams curriculum’s emphasis on intensive reading and writing prepares students for college throughout all grades. The Middle School program builds good study habits and hones specific abilities, such as answering essay questions and studying for comprehensive exams. In Upper School, Williams teachers work with students to find the optimum courses that will challenge their abilities, afford them the chance to shine, and best build a consistent academic portfolio. Likewise, through Williams wide array of arts, athletics and extracurricular offerings, students can explore their interests, learn good time management skills, and demonstrate the enthusiastic passion and long-term commitment that colleges seek.
