Though there is no service requirement at Williams, students find ways to give back and give of themselves. It is simply an intrinsic part of the culture at school. The Service Committee holds a Volunteer Fair at the start of each school year to highlight the broad array of service projects Williams students tackle.
For example, Service Committee student leaders Sara Sargent ’08, Ben Green ’08, and Julian Sacca-Schaeffer ’09 oversaw Williams student participation in the Holiday Angel project. Students bought and wrapped hundreds of gifts for Child and Family Services of SE CT. The Service Committee has made a great difference already this school year, including:
Filled 20 Thanksgiving food baskets for the families of El Centro
Filled a large duffle bag with hygiene items for Foster Children
Raised $1,000 from the Coffeehouse to supprt the Haitian Health Foundation's education programs for children
Raised $600 for New London Community Meal Center and $400 for Saint Vincent DePaul Place in Norwich (soup kitchens) with proceeds from Hungry Country Lunch Day
Raised $100 for UNICEF from change collected in Trick or Treat for UNICEF
Sent a large box of gently used sports equipment to Pueblo Nuevo in Costa Rica
Tutors at BP Learned participated in a pre-Thankgiving celebration with the children and their families.
Participated in a Haunted House at the Childrens' Museum of Southeastern CT
Started the winter coat drive for the homeless and will continue this drive throughout the cold months.
Continued to recycle cell phones, ink jet cartridges and other small electronics. Each check we receive is given to the New London Community Meal Center. Our last check purchased food for the center.
Meredith Green and her Sudan group are making and selling doll pins for "Save Darfur."
The El Centro tutors made Ginger Bread Houses with the children.
Activities also continue off campus at The Womens' Center, Lyman Allen Museum, Drop In Learning Center, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, BP Learned, New London Community Meal Center.
