Williams vs Ethel Walker Lost 3-2 Wed Nov 5, 2008

Clematis Everett on November 5, 2008 at 7:31 PM -0500 wrote: Ethel  Walker 3, Williams 2 Williams rallied after being down 3-0, but fell  short in the CISAC semi-finals. Williams started the game well by  threatening to score early on, but an Ethel Walker counter attack  caught the entire Williams team off-guard and Ethel Walker went up  1-0 four minutes into the game. Ethel Walker continued to play well,  scoring two more goals throughout the half. Yet, at the point when  the team could have given up and only gone through the motions for  the rest of the game, Williams stepped up the level of play. The half  ended with a series of penalty corners, concluding with Hayley  Caruso's pass to Sarah Lane to put Williams on the board. The Blues  came out strongly in the second half and continued to challenge Ethel  Walker; when Emma Zumsande put a rebound off the goalkeeper's pads into the cage, the Ethel Walker team certainly did not know what had  happened. The last fifteen minutes of the game were hard fought, but  neither team scored again. The Williams defense did a fantastic job,  with Laura Hagen halting several attacks, Anna Daren breaking up  penalty corners, Lauren Morse having several key stops, and, of  course, Alex Ivimey totaling twelve outstanding saves for the day.  Before the game, the Williams seniors were surprised to be recognized  as a part of Ethel Walker's senior day - not a typical occurrence for  a playoff game. PS - Although the season ended on a disappointing  note, the underclassmen made clear on the bus ride home that this  team has had a great season; individual players and the team as a  whole have improved tremendously since the season began in August.  The six seniors in particular never gave up and led by example  throughout; it was this attitude that kept us in the game today, and  everyone should look back on the season proud of their  accomplishments and pleased with their efforts. Coach White and I  have certainly felt that our time was well spent working with you all.

STATISTICS: Williams: 10 penalty corners - 38 fouls - 10 shots - 12

saves. Ethel Walker: 18 penalty corners - 52 fouls - 16 shots - 5 saves

Williams vs Canterbury Tied 1-1 Monday Nov 3, 2008

Williams played a strong game against Canterbury today at Hopkins.  Canterbury started the game strongly, and it took a little while for  the Williams players to adjust to their short passing style, but  defensive saves from Laura Hagen, Anna Daren, Lauren Morse, and, most  importantly,Alex Ivimey kept Williams in the game. Emma Zumsande, Ren  Robinson, and Elma Burnham moved the ball up the field well but did  not capitalize on any opportunities. Unfortunately, Canterbury kept  knocking on the door and finally scored with four minutes left in the  first half. But the second half was an much different story! As the  Canterbury players tired, Williams put the ball down in the  Canterbury end and earned corner after corner. With ten minutes left  in the game, Elma Burnham got the ball right in front of the cage and  masterfully put in in to tie the score. Williams did not let down,  but continued to dominate the final minutes of the game; a string of  corners at the conclusion of regulation unfortunately ended in a shot  that just missed the post. With darkness quickly engulfing the field,  the officials made the decision not to play a 7 v. 7 overtime period  - the right call safety-wise, but tough because the Blues undoubtedly

could have outlasted Canterbury. Still, a great game all told and an

excellent preparation for the CISAC semi-finals on Wednesday at Ethel  Walker.(coach everett)

STATISTICS: Williams: 8 penalty corners - 34 fouls - 10 shots - 8

saves. Canterbury: 3 penalty corners - 53 fouls - 13 shots - 3 saves.

Williams vs Stoneleigh- Burnham won 6-0 Saturday Nov 1, 2008

Last home game of the season - SENIOR DAY ! Prior to the competition,  the 6 varsity field hockey seniors were recognized with their  parents, friends and teammates watching. Coach Everett presented all  senior players with a bouquet as Mrs. Annie Philbrick introduced  them. Senior numbers were painted on the field in their honor; #2  Perry Smizer, #4 Sarah Lane, #5 Emma Zumsande, #11 Tess Williams, #12  Elma Burnham, & #15 Laura Hagen. It was an awesome day for the  seniors, raising the team record to 6-6 and defeating Stoneleigh- Burnham 6-0. Perry recorded a HAT TRICK (3 goals), Sarah Lane  offered an assist, Emma posted 1 goal and 3 assists, Elma scored 2  goals, Laura had an assist off the "E.T." corner play, and Tess made significant contributions to the highly productive offense. Everyone was given plenty of  playing time; thus, everyone gave their support and game finesse  towards the team victory. CONGRATULATIONS to the TEAM and Coach  Everett for the WIN, TEAM PLAY and SPORTSMANSHIP. It was wonderful  seeing and hearing parents and friends on the hill cheering and  giving their support to the team. Thanks! And thanks again to our  statisticians Mrs. Zumsande and Mrs. Philbrick. The Blues have a  rescheduled game at the Hopkins School against Canterbury 3:45 on  Monday. Wednesday, November 5th the team will travel to Ethel Walker

for a semi-final CISAC game. (srw)

Williams vs Westover Won 2-1 Wed. Oct 22, 2008

The Williams field hockey team played one of their best and most

exciting games of their season defeating a very competitive Westover  squad 2-1. Defensively the Blues showed more strength and unlimited  energy while they marked their immediate opponent tightly in the  defensive circle. Lauren Morse kept the opponent from taking shots  near the left goal post and distributed strong free hits to her  offense. Laura Hagen and Anna Daren supplied the Blues with power  hits and quick rushes during corners preventing on target shots at  goal from Westover. Goalie Alex Ivimey played an outstanding game  posting 13 saves. In addition to the saves Alex offered touches away  from the cage that forced the opposition to release the ball before  ready - a tactic causing the ball to miss the goal. Hayley Caruso  played a nice full field game with tenacity backing-up the front line  along with supporting the defensive backs. Sarah Lane had an  excellent game exhibiting strong controlled stick work with plenty of  backing up while initiating offensive attacks. Offensively. At the  end of the first 30 minutes of play both teams remained scoreless.  Second period. It took Elma Burnham just TWENTY seconds after the  center pass to bring the ball down the field for a shot at goal which

was slightly tapped into the cage by teammate Emma Zumsande. Elma  credited with the assist and Emma credited with the goal gave the  Blues a 1-0 lead. At 23:28 Rebeca Devivo tied the game for Westover  during a long hit. The ball was deflected into the air into the goal  cage. Definitely a high percentage shot with very little or no  opportunity for a goalie to stop. Elma scored the winning goal at  16:20 with a deliberate shot that whizzed by the opponents. Perry  Smizer, Danielle Briggs, Ren Robinson, Tess Williams and Abby Reiser  offered plenty of support and action on the field. Congratulations to  all the players for the awesome team victory and congrats to Coach  Everett for her leadership and encouragement. Much appreciation to  Mrs. Phibrick and Mrs. Zumsande for keeping the score book and  statistics. (srw)

Williams vs Kingswood Oxford Lost 3-0 Mon Oct 20, 2008

A feisty Kingswood-Oxford team led by their goalie kept the Blues

from scoring during 60 minutes of competition. KO scored 3 goals for  the win raising their record to 4-8 while Williams dropped to 4-6. An  unmarked player scored the first goal at 14:17 during the first half.  KO's second goal came at 17:08, second half, from a nice drive just  inside the circle from a player also unmarked. KO's final goal  entered the cage at 6:19 off a well executed penalty stroke against  the Blue's goalie, Alex Ivimey. Scrambling play in front of the goal  forced Alex to smother the ball to keep it out of the cage. This save  resulted in a penalty stroke and a second chance at preventing a  goal. With approximately 1:30 remaining, KO's fastest player broke- away from both teams in an attempt to score a 4th goal. Alex sprinted  towards the top of the circle where she fronted the opponent stopping  the shot as the opponent entered the circle. An awesome and  successful challenge for the Blues goal keeper. While the team played  hard, excellent hustle was displayed by Elma Burnham, Emma Zumsande,  Laura Hagen and Anna Daren. A special thanks to all the students (&  Mascot), parents and friends for their wonderful cheering and support  on "Spirit Day" along with thanks to our scorekeeper and timer, Mrs.

Zumsande and Mrs. Philbrick. (srw)

STATISTICS: Williams: 8 penalty corners - 34 fouls - 10 shots - 8

saves. Kingswood-Oxford: 3 penalty corners - 51 fouls - 13 shots - 9

saves.

Williams vs Hopkins lost 2-1 Wed Oct 15, 2008

Sluggish playing by the Lady Blues sent them home with a 1-2 loss to  Hopkins, 3-5-2, while dropping their own overall record to 4-5. At  18:28 Isabel Ruane scored on an assist putting Hopkins on the  scoreboard first. Emma Zumsande gave Sarah Lane an assist at 15:16  during the second period tying the game. A few seconds shy of 2  minutes Ruane scored the winning goal for Hopkins. Additional players  who offered some good stick work and playing time include, Perry  Smizer, Hayley Caruso, Anna Daren, Ren Robinson, Tess Williams, Elma  Burnham and Laura Hagen. Alex Ivimey in cage had a nice game despite the loss. The Blues as a team seemed to be lacking energy along with  lacking an attack mode necessary for successful offensive and  defensive play. Monday, October 20th, the varsity field hockey team  will host Kingswood-Oxford at 4:30. Come out to the athletic complex  and cheer for your team. Appreciated thanks to our statisticians and  parents for their support. (srw)

STATISTICS: Williams: 6 penalty corners- 33 fouls - 11 shots - 8 GK

Williams vs Bancroft lost 2-1 Friday Oct 3, 2008

Bancroft was a good team lead by a knowledgeable coach. Statistics

were comparable with the opponent's. A victory for the Blues was just not meant to be despite Williams playing one of their best games this  season with an exceptionally well played first half. Williams played  with controlled skill; they played smoothly together, they played  with intensity, they played with heart, and they displayed true  sportsmanship throughout the game. They played at a higher level than  their opponent in every aspect but a short lapse in their playing at  12:25 and 3:45 in the second half allowed Bancroft a 2-1 win. 44  seconds into the second period Emma Zumsande, who was double-teamed,  scored the Blues lone goal assisted by Elma Burnham. Hayley Caruso  and Laura Hagen supported the team with some strong defensive play.  Kudos to the TEAM for their tenacity, team play, and sportsmanship.  Thanks to our supportive parents. (srw)

STATISTICS: Williams: 1 penalty corner - 57 fouls - 7 shots - 2 GK

saves. Bancroft: 5 penalty corners - 58 fouls - 8 shots - 4 GK saves.

WILLIAMS VS KLHT Won 2-1 Wednesday Oct 1, 2008

167 fouls or an average of 1.1 fouls called every 30 seconds thwarted  offensive threats and fast breaks limiting the Williams team to 2  goals. Persistent defensive play by the Blues allowed KLHT to sneak  only 1 ball into the cage. 'Happy whistlers' did not offset the  ability of the Lady Blues to dominate the game offensively who posted  21 shots at goal with 14 penalty corners against KLHT's 6 shots at  goal and 1 penalty corner. At 16:06, first half, the KLHT goalie  Nikkia Ellis impeded the progress of the ball into the cage by  standing on top of it offering Williams a penalty stroke. Emma  Zumsande directed a  nice flick towards the left back post of the  cage giving the Blues the lead.  KLHT's Molly Rather tied the game  early into the second half. Tess Williams scored the game wining goal  at 14:11 assisted by Ren Robinson. Perry Smizer was also credited  with an assist with her pass to Ren from the right side of the field  just outside the scoring circle. Congratulations to Coach Everett and  the Williams players for their win and their continuous   sportsmanship. Thanks to our statisticians for their appreciated help  and support. (sw)

STATISTICS: Williams: 14 penalty corners - 67 fouls - 21 shots - 2 GK

saves (Ivimey).

King Low Hey Wood Thomas: 1 penalty corner - 65 fouls - 6 shots - 10

GK saves.

Williams vs Greens Farms Lost 1-0 Sat Sept. 20, 2008

A Greens Farms breakaway at 27:05 during the first period gave the  visitors the lead until Elma Burnham tied the game at 21:24 assisted  by Tess Williams. At the 12:56 mark in the second half of play,  Greens Farms scored the game winning goal dropping theBlues record  to 1-3 while raising theirs to 2-2. Williams did increase their  playing intensity by establishing more offensive play within their  shooting circle but it was not enough to offset theopponent's fast  break. In addition to 11 penalty corners and 13 shots at goal, the  Lady Blues created numerous scoring opportunities until the final  whistle but could not capitalize on their unyielding effort. Anna  Daren and Laura Hagen, defensivebacks, played strong for the Blues.  Many thanks to our cheering and supportive spectators and parents. (srw)

STATISTICS:Williams: 11 penalty corners - 36 fouls - 13 shots - 6 GK

saves. Greens Farms: 7 penalty corners - 56 fouls - 12 shots - 3 GK

saves.

Williams vs Hamden Hall Lost 4-3 Wed Sept. 17, 2008

32 shots at goal,13 penalty corners and 3 goals did not off-set  Hamden's 4 goals scored through rushed breakaways and choppy shots at  a crowded cage. Williams played well controlling the majority of the  game while keeping Hamden to 16 shots at goal and 5 penalty corners.  Perry Smizer scored for the Blues unassisted at 21:15 in the first  period. Hamden dumped in two goals to take the lead in the half  keeping it as their goalie stopped a penalty stroke taken by Emma  Zumsande at 27:21. During the second period, Ren Robinson scored a  goal for Williams from Emma's assist. At this time Hamden had a 4-2  lead. Emma scored the third and last goal of the game with 2 seconds  remaining on the clock. The Lady Blues played hard and together until  the game ending whistle. This certainly was a tough loss for the  Blues. Hayley Caruso played very well at midfield offering plenty of  defense, strong drives and nice support for the front line. Elma  Burnham, at left wing, showed a tremendous amount of hustle by  offering plenty of offensive action along with tackling back in the  defensive zones. Williams dropped to 1-2 while Hamden evened their  record at 1-2. Kudos to the players for never quitting. Thanks to all  our spectators for their cheering and their support. (srw)

STATISTICS: Williams : 13 penalty corners - 32 fouls - 32 shots - 12

GK saves (A. Ivimey). Hamden Hall: 5 penalty corners - 42 fouls - 16

shots - 11 GK saves.

Williams vs St Lukes Won 2-0 Sat Sept 13, 2008

Williams posted a huge away win by defeating St. Luke's on their

artificial turf. The Lady Blues showed offensive and defensive

balance with improvement in team strategy and improvement in

individual skill. An exciting 2-0 victory raised the Blues' record to

1-1. Senior co-captain Emma Zumsande scored at the 11:04 mark during  the first period of play from an assist by Ren Robinson off a penalty  corner. Senior Elma Burnham was also credited with an assist on her  perfect pass to Ren setting up the unstoppable goal. Unassisted, Emma  scored her second goal at the 8:32 during the second period of play  which helped to put a damper on St. Luke's cohesiveness and ability  to score. Goalkeeper Danielle Auerbach had an excellent day in cage  securing 11 saves giving her credit for the Blues shutout.  Congratulations to the Lady Blues and Coach Everett for the team  victory. Thanks to Mrs. Zumsande and Mrs.Philbrick, our  statisticians , and thanks to all our parents for their continued  support. (srw)

Williams vs Ethel Walker Lost 1-0 Wed. Sept 10, 2008

Williams, with the addition of nine newcomers to the team, suppressed  Ethel Walker's usual scoring strength allowing them only 1 goal  on   a Blues defensive miscue.  The statistics give the  impression that EW dominated the game, but this was just not so. Elma  Burnham and Emma Zumsande set up  plenty of offensive scoring  opportunities, but the team's momentum was not quite enough to secure a  goal. On the opposite end of the field, Lauren Hagen and Anna Daren  showed  defensive strength with support coming from first time goalie  Alex Ivimey securing 15 saves. Newcomers Danielle Briggs, Hayley  Caruso, Ren Robinson, and Lauren Morse showed a lot of improvement  since the scrimmages while additional returning players Perry Smizer  and Tess Williams showed their tenacity. The field hockey players are  certainly looking forward to an exciting and successful season.  Thanks to our statisticians for their appreciated assistence and  thanks to the parents for their continued support.

STATISTICS:  Williams: 3 penalty corners - 30 fouls - 3 shots at goal - 15 GK saves.  Ethel Walker: 13 penalty corners - 43 fouls - 23 shots at goal - 1 GK  save.  E. Zumsande 1 shot  & E. Burnham 2 shots.
