Paint the Town Blue!
Come take part as Williams participates in the annual New London Memorial Day Parade to be held this year on Saturday, May 22 (gathering at 9:00 a.m.).
Students and parents alike, come out to march in your Blues uniforms, spiritwear or even just blue/white clothes to march. Head of School Mark Fader will be driving a Williams School bus to lead our contingent (including Williams' mascot). The parade route begins at our original WMI campus on Broad Street in New London.
Show your school pride and enjoy a fantastic community event, which this year is specially honoring our neighboring Coast Guard Academy for its 100th anniversary. The Williams contingent will continue a strong tradition established by our WMI alumnae who marched in the hundreds in New London parades of yesteryear.

Blues in the News

• Jeff Brodie ’11 and Alex Lin ’10 were interviewed by CNN for Anderson Cooper 360 and featured on the front page of the Westerly Sun this week. They have gained national and international attention for their Project WIN (Westerly Innovations Network) which they began in middle school to tackle the issue of electronic waste disposal.
In addition, Alex has won the national level of the AXA Achievement Scholarship. AXA Foundation, the philanthropic arm of AXA Equitable, teamed with U.S. News and World Report to select 52 state winners. From the pool of 52 state winners, Alex was among the ten who were selected as national winners and earn an additional scholarship. In addition to the scholarship, he also receives the offer of an internship with AXA.
• The New London Lodge of Elks annually recognizes outstanding high school students and this year selected Kara Shannon ’10 and Sam Pieniadz ’10 as award recipients. She earned a cash prize as well as the title at the 2010 Connecticut Young Writers Awards Ceremony held at Eastern Connecticut State University. Danielle Auerbach ’10, Devon Gay ’10, Heather Holmes ’11, Jim Hu ’10, Lauren Morse ’10, and Nancy O'Connor ’10 were also named county finalists. Taylor Bickford ’10 (right) won second place and a cash prize in the state-wide Thornton Wilder writing competition earlier this spring for his poem "Crabbing."
|
Cloud Gazing
by Grace Beggins
Shadows, light, maple trees - clouds arranged by kaleidoscopes
Aeolus tortures me with endless vertigo as he inhales
one and pants out another, gasping and wheezing
to revamp the heavens. With a fathomless
gust the shape-shifter expels his melody. The clouds dance above as he
blows one closer, like a saint dying upside down.
|
Crabbing
by Taylor Bickford
We would wait until high tide,
Wait until the black rocks shone,
Go down with twine and bucket
To the concrete pier.
We knew where to find them,
Bundles of mussels under the boulders,
Lay them open with stones,
Bind them up with string
The white line pressing into their
Pink insides shimmering and wet.
They drop into the water almost silently,
Spiraling down to the bottom
Leaving behind footprints of bubbles that
Catch the sun in their curves.
And a green flash under the water,
A shout, a laugh,
Pulling up on the string
And dodging the claws,
The tiny legs beating a tattoo on our hands.
Sometimes she would watch from the window,
Or from a chair outside
If she was strong that day.
But we never looked back at the house.
There are days we live
As if death were nowhere
In the background.
And then
There are days
When death is all we know.
