School community participates in annual Diversity Day

Thanks to the work of the Multicultural Club, the entire School celebrated its annual Diversity Day on Tuesday, January 22. The day featured a special class schedule and a range of activities. Several students and faculty brought in a snack that represented their culture to share with the community.

The Diversity Day program began with advisee meetings where students watched and discussed short video clips on race, identity, and equality. Many advisee groups also played a number of multicultural games including Spoons, Nin, and The Dictionary Game using words from a variety of cultures. The student body was also treated to an assembly led by Mr. Fader, who spoke about the March on Washington in 1963, and Dr. James E. Mitchell, vice president of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Trust Fund, who shared more about MLK and his legacy in New London.

For many a highlight of the day was the Circle Activity in the gym, which challenged studens to think about how they connect with others and view themselves. Diversity Day culminated with an advisee meeting debrief, where students discussed their reactions to the day, watched another short video on assumptions and bias, and made a diversity chain celebrating our similarities and differences.
