Food for Thought and Thought for Food Earth Day 2009 Williams' student Service Committee put together a full slate of fun activities for Friday, April 17 to mark Earth Day. Given the enormous range of environmental issues, each year the Service Committee determines a theme to focus exploration and discussion. This year students looked at the environmental and human impact of modern food production. Following a multimedia opening assembly led by Williams science teacher Dr. Gaines Tyler, students and faculty gathered at Connecticut College's Evans Hall to view excerpts from the documentary King Corn. A diverse panel of eight experts (from a biotech scientist to oyster farmer to restaurateur) shared their insights and perspectives on issues raised by the movie and the realities of farming today. Students then broke into 13 groups disbursing to project sites throughout southeastern Connecticut from Old Saybrook to Ledyard to Stonington. Students visiting Tiffany Farms in Old Lyme were featured in an article in The Day on Saturday, April 18. Photo highlights below are courtesy of Mr. Cohen, Mrs. Spring, and Mrs. Wheeler.
