Junior College Night

On Saturday, January 5th, families of the Class of 2020 gathered for Junior Student/Parent College Day.
This event has been a highlight of our College Counseling program and has continued to grow and evolve to better guide families through the college application process. This year our new Director of College Counseling Jackie Lefebvre and Associate Director of College Counseling Dana Clark each presented valuable information for families. Mrs. Lefebvre presented on early application programs, explaining the pros and cons of "early action" and "early decision" programs so families can make informed strategic choices about what's best for each student. Mrs. Clark presented on communication skills, prepping students and families for interactions from phone calls to interviews. The College Counseling team also assembled a panel of four guest speakers from college admissions offices across the country.

Suji Yi, from Brandeis University, presented on the importance of various methods students can use to show "demonstrated interest." Paul Hovey, from Fairfield University, explained the importance of community involvement, such as student clubs and activities. Shannon Soule, from Clark University, discussed what she looks for in an essay. Finally, Julia Sanders, from University of San Francisco, discussed the role that interviews can play in admissions.

"I feel that this day was really successful," Mrs. Lefebvre remarked. "Both parents and students came away with key information regarding college applications from experts in the field. They got to hear firsthand what admissions officers are looking for as they read applications, which alleviated a great deal of stress about the process. The admissions officers offered great advice for students just starting out in their college search. They also made themselves available to field parent and student questions. I think it made the day really worthwhile."
This distinctive event helps guide families through the College Application process and only gets better each year!
